The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking innovative strategies and solution to enhance the climate resiliency of the State’s transportation infrastructure for our for all Californians.
California is confronting a growing challenge from the effects of climate change, which are increasingly impacting the State's transportation systems. To ensure the long-term sustainability of these systems, adaptive strategies are essential to mitigate and respond to climate-related disruptions.
The proposed solutions should align with Caltrans’ overarching goals:
Lead Climate Action: Solutions should actively contribute to climate action by enhancing the resilience of transportation infrastructure and reducing the environmental impact of climate-related disruptions.
Advance Equity and Livability in All Communities: Solutions should promote equity by ensuring that transportation assets are resilient and accessible to all communities, particularly those that are vulnerable to climate change impacts.
Enhance and Connect the Multimodal Transportation Network: Consider how solutions can contribute to improving the connectivity and reliability of the multimodal transportation network, ensuring that it remains accessible and functional under changing climate conditions.
Proposals submitted in response to this challenge should encompass the following key components:
Climate-Resilient Infrastructure Designs: Present innovative infrastructure designs and engineering solutions that are resilient to the impacts of climate change. This may include elevated structures, flood-resistant materials, and coastal protection measures.
Asset Tracking and Monitoring: Describe strategies and technologies for tracking and monitoring transportation assets to assess their condition and vulnerability to climate-related stressors. This could involve sensors, remote monitoring, and predictive analytics.
Maintenance Strategies: Detail proactive maintenance practices and strategies to protect transportation assets from climate-induced wear and damage. This should include approaches for optimizing maintenance schedules and resource allocation.
Emergency Response Planning: Present emergency response strategies and plans that are tailored to address climate-related emergencies such as extreme weather events, flooding, wildfires, and other climate impacts. This should include coordination with relevant agencies and rapid response protocols.
Long-Range and Strategic Planning: Address long-range and strategic planning that accounts for the evolving impacts of climate change. Consider how transportation networks can adapt to changing weather patterns, sea-level rise, and other climate factors.
Efficient Asset Management Technologies: Propose technologies and tools to improve overall asset management efficiency, including data analytics, decision support systems, and asset performance modeling.
