The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking innovative strategies and solution to improve the multimodal travel experience for our residents.
This includes integrated solutions that enhance public transit, pedestrian safety, cycling infrastructure, and overall transportation accessibility. 

Background

Enhancing the overall travel experience is pivotal to promoting sustainable and efficient transportation choices. By addressing the diverse needs of travelers and prioritizing accessibility, California can reduce its carbon footprint and create a more equitable transportation system.

The proposed solutions should align with Caltrans’ overarching goals:

Enhance and Connect the Multimodal Transportation Network: Solutions should contribute to improving the connectivity of multimodal transportation options, ensuring that travelers can seamlessly transition between modes of transportation.

Advance Equity and Livability in All Communities: The objective is to advance equity by providing accessible transportation options and enhancing the livability of communities throughout California. Proposals should address how the enhancements contribute to these goals.

Requirements & Outcome

Proposals submitted in response to this challenge should encompass the following key components:

Public Transit Improvements: Present strategies to enhance public transit systems, making them more efficient, reliable, and accessible. Consider innovations such as real-time information, fare integration, and last-mile connectivity solutions.

Pedestrian Initiatives: Detail initiatives aimed at improving pedestrian safety and accessibility across the state. This may include infrastructure enhancements such as crosswalk improvements, traffic calming measures, and pedestrian-friendly urban planning.

Cycling Infrastructure Enhancements: Describe plans to enhance cycling infrastructure, including dedicated bike lanes, bike-sharing programs, secure bike storage, and initiatives that encourage bike commuting.

Accessibility Enhancements: Address accessibility for all, including individuals with disabilities and those with limited mobility. Propose solutions such as accessible public transit, inclusive design, and innovative technology to improve accessibility.
